Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy confirmed Holger Osieck as Australia's new national team coach, with the German committing himself to be based down under.
New Socceroos coach set to be namedCahill, Milligan ruled outSocceroos ready for Slovenia
The 61-year-old succeeds Dutchman Pim Verbeek who left the position at the end of the Socceroos' involvement in the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Osieck has signed a deal until the end of Australia's 2014 World Cup campaign.
The announcement was made by Lowy via a video conference from Ljubljana, where Australia will face Slovenia in a friendly international on Thursday morning (AEST).
Osieck will attend the match and will take up the reins at its conclusion, ahead of the September internationals against Switzerland and Poland.
“Our coaching selection committee set out a number of very clear objectives from the outset to measure the prospective coaches against," Lowy said.
"They must;
:: have demonstrated the capacity to rebuild teams and to work with young footballers and develop them into internationally competitive players
:: be prepared to work with the national technical director and his department to enhance the elite player pathway program
:: have proven experience at international level and success in Asia
:: commit to be based in Australia and work with Australian staff to develop our own leaders of the future
“Holger clearly meets these criteria and comes highly recommended as he has worked at all levels of the game and will combine his coaching expertise and experience with an ability to contribute to the future development of young players and in particular will act as mentor to Australian coaches as we develop our own national coaches for the future."
Osieck said he was looking forward to working with the national team and on the development of football in Australia in general alongside FFA Technical Director Han Berger.
“I am excited about working with the Socceroos and building on the team’s impressive results in Asia and around the world,” Osieck said.
“Taking over at a stage of natural transition as we start our preparations for 2014 is an ideal opportunity to influence the future direction of the young players and coaches from Australia."
Osieck is a former coach of Canada, winning the 2001 CONCACAF Gold Cup during his tenure, has experience coaching in the Bundesliga, J-League, was as an assistant to Franz Beckenbauer when Germany won the 1990 World Cup and has been involved with the FIFA Technical Study Group (TSG) since 2004.
With assistant coach Aurelio Vidmar already installed, Osieck said he would spend time with the ex-Adelaide United boss before deciding who he will add to his coaching staff.
"I feel very much honoured to be your choice," Osieck said. "It's a very big challenge for me, it's a great challenge.
"We're not starting from scratch. Australia has done very well in recent years and made the past two World Cups and our first target should be to establish our team on that level on a permanent basis."
Osieck said his system and tactics would be determined by the players at his disposal, saying he would not get locked into a rigid system.
"It depends on the situation, it depends on the players available for a particular game, it depends on the opponent," he explained.
"Your game must be based on a certain structure where everybody knows what to do.
"Based on the basic structure everybody has to follow, then there's a freedom of expression."
