Sydney Olympic FC will launch their 2012 NSW Premier League campaign, this Sunday 1ST April 2012, when the reigning NSW Premier League Champions host the Rockdale City Suns at Belmore Sports Ground, with kick off scheduled at 5 pm.
After a spectacular 2011 season, in which the ‘Blues’ celebrated their first ever Premiership and Championship victory since joining the competition in 2002, the reigning Champions hope to defend their title and will endeavour to emulate their previous success in the 2012 season.
Peter Tsekenis and Peter Papoythis will once again take the reins at Sydney Olympic as head coach and assistant coach respectively. Whilst, veteran midfielder and penalty-kick specialist Phil Makrys will captain the side throughout the 2012 season.
Despite the departures of several key players at the conclusion of the 2011 season, Peter Tsekenis will once again field a strong side with a mix of experienced footballers and rising talents to be showcased throughout the season.
Tsekenis has recruited strongly in the off season and has added the following players to the 1st Grade squad list, Blaz Dejanovic, Aman Hadid, U20’s Golden Boot Marco Sama, Kutaiba Elrich, Sam Awad, Joel Wood, David Dascal and Marton Vass. Tsekenis has also recruited former Inter Milan youth footballer, Valerio Ringoli and Benin international Junior Abalo.
Tsekenis and his side set the benchmark in the 2011 season and are aware that the upcoming season will be no easy ride, with the quest to win silverware in the 2012 set to be difficult and a challenge. With, a target on their backs the ‘Blues’ will definitely be a side to beat and a force to be reckoned with, throughout the upcoming season.
Rockdale City Suns had a turbulent 2011 season and despite fielding a strong and talented side, the Suns failed to secure a finals position. At the conclusion of the scheduled 2011 competition, the Suns finished in 8th position on the ladder with 28 points.
After, losing several members of the 2011 squad including Paul Dee, Adem Kir, James Monie and veteran defender Mirko Jurilj, the Suns recruited strongly and made several promising signings in the off season, adding former AIS player David Talevski and Brisbane Roar Youth player Tomislav Cirjak to the squad list, as well as, former Sydney United defender Ricky Perinich and HAKOA Youth goal keeper, Ryan Norval.
Former Socceroo, Wally Savor will lead the Suns as head coach in the 2012 season, whilst Pece Apolevski will take the reins on the field as captain of the Rockdale side.
