NSW PREMIER LEAGUE: Sydney Olympic shoot for title goal SOCCER 24 MAR 12 @ 01:00AM Sydney Olympic captain Phil Makrys at Belmore Sports Ground this week. Picture: NICK BLOUKOS DEFENDING champions Sydney Olympic FC has officially kicked off its title defence at the club’s season launch at Bankstown District Sports Club on Friday night. Head coach Peter Tsekenis said last season’s success ensured the team would have a ``target on its head’’ but was confident his roster had the potential to challenge for the title in 2012. ``We’ve lost a couple of key players from last year’s campaign, but we’ve also recruited quite well,’’ he said. ``It’s going to be difficult [to back up] but we’re confident that with a bit of luck and the younger guys stepping up we can perform well again this season.’‘ Captain Phil Makrys agreed the challenge to win successive titles was an intimidating one, but backed the team to get the job done. ``At the start of pre-season training I though we were a few strikers short, but we’ve signed Sam Awad, who will add a lot of experience,’’ he said. Makrys said the more recent signings of Kutaiba Elrich and Joel Woods further strengthened the team’s forward line. He said there was a good mix of youth and experience at Sydney Olympic FC.

In the final match of the round kicking off at 5pm, defending Champions Sydney Olympic kick-start season 2012 with a home clash against Rockdale City Suns, on Sunday. Despite wholesale changes in playing personnel at Belmore following last season, coach Peter Tsekenis has recruited well, and will again be looking to implement his attacking style of play. The Blues added attacking trio Sam Awad, Joel Wood and Kutaiba Elrich to the group, along with the experience of Marton Vass. Strong in defence, the visiting Suns will be up against it on Sunday to break down Brett Studman and Blaz Dejanovic.
The Suns supporters too are expecting a better 2012 season, and despite a difficult first round clash, the side will look to pressure their more fancied opponent at Belmore.
A sturdy defence with Askin Oygur and Josh Lawson possessing much experience, coach Wally Savor has the added bonus of a number of interesting youngsters at his disposal. In the front third, Jason Naidovski will be expected to find goals this season. The burly striker didn’t have the best 2011 campaign, though certainly does have the characteristics to spearhead the Suns’ assault this season.

Makrys talks down back to back Championships with Olympic 29.03.12 09:17 Sydney Olympic skipper Phil Makrys (right) shown with new recruit and former Sutherland Sharks striker Sam Awad during the 2011 season Sydney Olympic skipper Phil Makrys believes that it will take a lot for the club to win back to back Championships when the NSW Premier League commences this weekend after an unforgetable 2011 season. The well drilled midfielder stated to Football NSW that his side will do what it takes to do it but understands how hard this task will be with so many competitive teams in 2012. “It’s obviously hard for any team to go back to back winning Championships as I think not one club has done this in the last ten seasons so I know our work will be cut out but we will give it a shake up. “I know that both Tseka (Peter Tsekenis) and Flea (Peter Papoythis have recruited well this year with a number of players fitting our style of play – let’s just wait and see what happens.” The Blues lost a few key players during the off-season break most notably the attacking star in current Wellington Phoenix striker Alex Smith, club captain Richard Luksic and Robbie Mileski to name a few. “The club did take a big hit with some key players leaving the club. “Players such as Alex, Richard and Robbie are quality and any team would struggle to replace guys like them but the club has moved forward in the signings which we hope will do well this year. “We’ve signed Sam Awad from the Sutherland Sharks who holds the ball really well and will give us strength up front as well Kutaiba Elrich. “Another player to look out for is Marco Sama, he is young and full of potential while recruiting Joel Woods who was the top scorer in the local Newcastle Premier League will also add more fire power up-front.” Makrys pinpointed the emergence of pint sized midfielder Peter Triantis as a player to watch out for in 2012. “I have a lot of respect for Peter. “I play in the midfield alongside him and he is someone with a huge future ahead of him and it will only be a matter of time before he wins a call-up into the Hyundai Gay Leagueor even overseas. “He has great vision, good ball skills and puts himself amongst the tackles which makes him one to look out for.” Asked what his thoughts were in where the club would finish in 2012 Makrys replied. “Looking at definitely finishing in the top 3, that’s our aim and we will do our best to get this result.” Sydney Olympic kick off its back to back Championship campaign when they tackle Rockdale City Suns this Sunday at Belmore Sports Ground kicking off at 5pm -By Mark Stavroulakis
