Insight: Sydney United 58 19.03.12 09:50
Sydney United 58 shown busily preparing for the season ahead at Edensor Park Football NSW writer Joseph Carlucci gives us his fourth insight feature on former NSL giants Sydney United 58 as part of a 12 part special analysing each NSW Premier League Club.
Sydney United 58
The Team: Sydney United 58 remain one of the strongest sides leading into the 2012 NSW Premier League. The Reds have managed to keep the majority of last season’s fine performing group together, with the loss of experienced duo Ufuk Talay and Mark Rudan replaced with some young, yet reliable talents, in the form of Stjepan Paric, Jarrod Lum and Mitchell Stamatellis.
Coach Jean-Paul De Marigny’s football philosophy has always been one of fast paced, attacking football, and with the additions made to the squad this season, goals aplenty will be expected of the Reds.
Vedran Janjetovic has been confirmed in goal for another season following his strong displays at Edensor Park with Michael Cindric to marshall the defensive line.
In midfield, De Marigny will have some tough decisions to make with the high quality of players at his disposal. Captain Ivo Bosnar will guarantee the work ethic he brings each time he takes the field, meanwhile the likes of Ante Tomic, Mitchell Thompson, Stjepan Paric and Petar Markovic will be expected to provide the strikers with many goal scoring opportunities.
Leading the strike force, lethal marksman Luka Glavas will again line up for the Reds with partners in crime Ben Vidaic and Elsid Barkhousir also expected to pitch in with their share of the goals this season.
In all, the Reds are arguably the least changed squad from last season, something De Marigny will hope to take full advantage of with a positive start to the campaign come Round 1.
The Coach: Jean-Paul De Marigny’s return to Sydney United 58 last season proved a successful one with the former NSW Institute of Sport, Australian Under-17 Joeys and Newcastle Jets’ Assistant coach leading his side to the grand final.
JP’s tenacity and pure determination were traits supporters of the old NSL witnessed when the former left-sided defender stormed up and down the flanks for Sydney City, Marconi Stallions, APIA-Leichhardt and Sydney Olympic over his playing career, similar traits that he has now brought to his coaching.
Player to watch: Steve Hayes was instrumental in Sydney United’s run towards the grand final last season with his tireless efforts throughout the campaign. Hayes’ goal scoring ability and all round movement out of midfield to feed the strikers proved a nightmare for opposing defences to stop.
The Reds number 10 was eagerly sought after by a number of clubs, though the Reds managed to hold onto their playmaker for another season. Coach Jean-Paul De Marigny will again look towards his ever reliable midfielder to act as linchpin between the midfield and the strikers.
Rising Star: Stjepan Paric is another emerging talent in the NSW Premier League, and following his breakthrough season at South Coast Wolves in 2011 – where the youngster cemented his spot in the first grade side – clubs across the State made a dash for his signature.
Sydney United moved quickest, swooping for Paric’s signature, a move that no doubt whets the appetite of the Reds’ supporters for the upcoming season. The midfielder will be a further bolster to the Reds midfield, following the departure of Ufuk Talay. Paric’s ability to score and create goals, with a decent set piece delivery, signal that the future is bright for Sydney United.
