If they wanted to get exposure they should have called up the organisers of the event and had all their junior Greek players march in the parade under a Sydney Olympic FC banner. That would have done more for the club than the advertising over the last 2 years combined.

Anyone ever been to the jail cell they had kolokotronis in in Napflion? Well its not so much a jail cell, as a cave build into the rock. The entrance about 1 metre high. Amazing to sit in the exact same spot the great man sat it.

It's a miracle there is even a Greek nation; how the church kept the religion, language, culture and traditions throughout the centuries of Ottoman dominance is incredible. NO nation or people, even the Jews, defied such adversity. Yeah sure the history and achievements of the Ancient Greeks and Byzantines makes me proud, but what makes me most proud to be Greek is the many people like Rigas Feraios who martyred for the nation and against all odds achieved independence.

The church being the protector of Hellenism is the biggest myth. Right up there with Skops being masos

read a history book megale you really believe kids had to go to church at night to learn Greek and etc, when its clearly recorded Greeks were amongst the biggest merchants and richest people in Constantinople during the Ottoman period. load of malakies. If we couldn't practise 'our religion' why was the Patriarch in Constantinople operate freely during Ottoman occupation? Fables and fantasies made up by the church

Haha I've read plenty of history books file. I do believe the church kept the culture alive. There were different Sultans and designated pashas who had different laws for religious tolerance. Of course the Greeks were not constantly fighting for 400 years, and yes they did co-exist and even integrate. None the less, the janniseries and devsirme processs was always occurring, and the entire idea of the Muslim religion is the crescent moon turning full and converting mankind to Islam. I consider your point though, and have heard you argument; really our Independence day should be on 23rd of February, but the Church set it up to fit into the Orthodox calendar.

The date for me doesn't matter, as long as we celebrate independence day
