The Hangover movie star Zach Galifianakis has shocked US audiences by smoking marijuana on live television.
Galifianakis was appearing on Bill Maher's HBO show Real Time to discuss Proposition 19, a new law being considered in California that would legalise marijuana.
During the panel discussion the comedian said he thought people might be opposed to marijuana legalisation because smoking marijuana was still considered “taboo”.
He then reached into his suit pocket, pulled out a joint and proceeded to light up as the audience broke into laughter.
The other four panellists reacted with shock and laughter.
Galifianakis generously offered the joint around and the woman panellist, who was laughing the hardest, reached across and took it.
She sniffed the smoke and then nodded, saying: "Oh it’s real, there you go".
Galifianakis took the joint back and continued smoking, leaning back in his chair and smiling.
The panel discussion continued for a few minutes until Galifianakis suddenly yelled out: “Oh my goodness look at those dragons!”
“I think that’s what people think it (smoking marijuana) will do,” he said, as the other panellists laughed.
