Tolgay Ozbey kicks his soccer career up a gear
FORMER Blacktown resident and soccer prodigy Tolgay Ozbey has kicked his career up a gear and taken the Indian Football world by storm.
Ozbey, 24 kicked the winning goal for Blacktown FC against the Bonnyrigg White Eagles in the NSW Premier League Grand Final last August taking out the Robbie Slater man of the match award in the process.
He found himself a hot property and almost signed with A League club the Central Coast Mariners when he received an offer to travel to India and play for East Bengal.
He was given under two weeks to weigh up the offer and ended up signing with the club just prior to the deadline of August 31.
Since then he has become a household name in the Indian league, kicking regular goals and playing to crowds of more than 100,000 in some games.
Ozbey’s father Allan said while the Mariners would have been another great option, the experience of playing in India was too good to refuse.
“He got picked up by a manager who thought he’d succeed there,” Mr Ozbey said.
“There is good money and a great opportunity out in Asia. We want to see if he can make the highest level in due course.”
Mr Ozbey said the Blacktown club had been pivotal in his son’s journey, but added the professionalism of the Indian League had taken his game to the next level.
Highlights of Ozbey’s career with the club include scoring two goals in front of 120,000 people in a match against Mohun Bagan, the arch rival of the club.
He has also collected three man-of-the- match awards and helped the club qualify for the AFC, Asia’s equivalent to the European club championship.
But he said one of the best surprises of the trip was to see the admiration the club’s supporters hold for his son.
“When I got there I just about got mobbed by kids wanting to shake hands with Tolgay’s father. It was incredible,” he said.
Ozbey’s contract has nearly expired and he is negotiating an upgrade with the club.
Mr Ozbey said there had also been interest from clubs in Turkey and southeast Asia but indicated his son was likely to stay in India.
“Four players from the Indian national squad will rejoin the east Bengal team after the Asian Cup and that will give him an idea of what sort of quality is out there,” he said.
