The Steve Christoforidis Charity Cup took place on Sunday 6 Match 2011, at Lidcombe Oval at an event that was aimed to show support to thousands of Greek-Australians who have battled and lost their lives to a silent but deadly killer of males and females in Australia today, “Mental Illness”.
The event commenced at 9.00am with the 7 teams participating, playing 3 rounds of half an hour games and also an exhibition game taking place in the evening between past players of Sydney Olympic and West Sydney Berries. Other events were also held on the day to entertain the crowd that tuned up in good numbers, as the organizers mentioned they estimate more than 2000 people attended throughout the day.
Sydney Olympic started the games in the morning with a young squad as a number of first grade players were not available. The team started slow but as the day was going by they were becoming stronger and stronger. This proved the hard work that has been done during pre-season by our coaching staff as the fitness level of the players was very good, a point that everyone noticed on the day.
In the Semi-Final Sydney Olympic played against Hurstville Minotaurs and won 2-0 and in the Grand Final the team showed great fighting spirit as they ended up playing with a player less after a red card shown while the score was still 0-0 but they showed the true spirit of our Club and were able to score 3 goals and comfortably win the trophy with the final score being 3-0.
Peter Tsekenis, Sydney Olympic head coach commented about the game: “I am very happy with the boys’ effort especially being a long day and showing character. It was good to win some silverware for the club and we plan on winning some more in the future.”
One of the main organizers of the event, Mr Theo Mitrothanasis mentioned: “All football games were contested in the spirit of the game and all were very close but I want to congratulate Sydney Olympic who were the victors of the first ever Steve Christoforidis Hellenic Cup.”
* Man of the match for the Tournament was Luke Gearin of Sydney Olympic FC
** The only negative after the weekend games are the two injuries, Mitchell Stamatelis got an ankle injury and Bill Tsanidis a knee injury. The physio staff of the Club will assess the injuries and will notify the Club as to how serious they may be and if they will have to miss any games in the forthcoming weeks.
*** For the record Sydney Olympic scored 9 goals and had only 1 goal against in 3 games in the round stage and in total 14 goals for and 1 against after the end of the tournament.
