Sydney Olympic beat Bonnyrigg and qualify for round 4 of the Waratah Cup posted by on May 19, 2011 A cold evening at Bonnyrigg Sports Club where in front of about 200 people, the majority once again Sydney Olympic fans, our favourite ‘blues’ beat Bonnyrigg White Eagles with a 2-3 score and qualified to the top 16 of the 2011 Football NSW Waratah Cup. Olympic started the game with Henderson under the goal posts, Giannaros, Studman, Tsanidis and Haydar at the back, Peter and Chris Triantis in the midfield, Husky Akil and William Angel on the sides and Tod Bamber and Alex Smith upfront. It was clear that Peter Tsekenis wanted to rest some of his key players such as Phil Makrys, Robert Mileski, Richard Luksic, Jerry Kalouris and David Gullo for the upcoming games of the Premier League. From the first minutes of the game both teams pushed to score a goal, but Bonnyrigg was able to score in the 5th minute from a set piece. Olympic boys stepped up their performance after the goal and just 10 minutes later Alex Smith equalized for Sydney Olympic with a strong shot from inside the box and had the Olympic fans on their feet once again this season. Only a few minutes later Bonnyrigg won a foul outside the box and with a great shot they were able to score to put their team in front of the score for the second time in the game. Sydney Olympic players did not seem that worried with the second goal of the game and continued pressuring Bonnyrigg players and was rewarded with a goal by Tod Bamber. Chris Triantis with a cross pass from the left found the head of Alex Smith that passed the ball to Tod and with a strong header was able to send the ball at the back of the net equalizing the game once again for Sydney Olympic with a 2-2 score. When the second half kicked off for the first 15 minutes both teams were trying to dominate the midfield and some hard tackles from Bonnyrigg and good passing from Sydney Olympic were the main attractions that kept the crowd on their feet. Half way through the second half, Sydney Olympic won a foul about 5 meters outside the penalty box and Peter Triantis decided to take it. He crossed the ball towards the right hand side of the penalty area were Bill Tsanidis was waiting and caught a header that wasn’t strong enough but Ibrahim Haydar was there to cross the ball over the line and put Olympic in front with 2-3. In the following minutes Peter Tsekenis refreshed his attacking duo by replacing Tod Bamber with Robert Mileski and towards the end of the game taking off Husky Akil to play Takayuki Omi and the blues had good possession of the ball. Bonnyrigg had a couple of chances as they tried to score a goal to take the game to extra time, but either Paul Henderson or the defence line of Olympic didn’t let the Eagles threaten Olympic. Some hard tackles from Bonnyrigg that were not punished by the referees, a yellow card for Brett Studman and a shocker of a challenge on Peter Triantis were the highlights till the end of the game. Olympic fans left happy from another away ground, the coaching staff and players once again singing the Olympic song in the dressing room satisfied with the performance and the win and the blue and white supporters continuing the trip this season getting ready to welcome the team home on the 12th of June for the first home game of the season. The draw for Round 4 of the waratah Cup will be held at Football NSW headquarters and we will inform our supporters of our next opponent by announcing it on our official website. www.sydneyolympicfc.com/news/2011/05/19/sydney-olympic-beat-bonnyrigg-and-qualify-for-round-4-of-the-waratah-cup/
