Sydney Olympic progress to the Quarter Finals of the Waratah Cup
posted by on June 9, 2011
NSW Premier League front runners Sydney Olympic have overcome their recent defeat in Round 11 to progress into the Quarter Finals of the Waratah Cup, outplaying the defending NSW Premier League Champions, Blacktown City FC 3-0.
In what was a very cold Wednesday night, both teams appeared a little rusty in the opening minutes of the game. However, Sydney Olympic top goal scorer Alex Smith soon began his threatening attack pressuring the opposition’s goalkeeper Simon Jaeger with a long range shot. No goal eventuated from Smith’s strike, however Olympics’ dominance soon continued. Moments later, Chris Triantis tried his luck with a right footed strike that was unfortunately saved by Jaeger.
Blacktown City FC attempted to counter-attack, however Chris Bedzo was unable to capitalise, with his header easily saved by the experienced Olympic goalkeeper Paul Henderson. In the 22nd minute Blacktown City FC defender Luke Austin fouled Olympics’ Takayuki Omi inside the box with the referee awarding a much deserved penalty. Smith stepped up and successfully put away the penalty that gave Olympic a 1 nil lead. The score remained the same for the remainder of the first half.
In the second half, Olympic continued to dominate their opponent as in the 52nd minute Olympic were awarded their second penalty of the game. Will Angel who was threatening in his attack against opposing defender Patrick Gatt was awarded a penalty after Gatt was unable to keep up with Angel and consequently dragged Angel down in the box.
Smith stepped up yet again to the penalty spot, however his attempt was saved by Jaeger but fortunately rebounded back straight to his feet where he was able to capitalise and secure a 2-nil score line. Blacktown continued to be outplayed and dominated by the ‘Blues’, as in the 64th minute defender Jerry Kalouris was provided with an open space on the left hand side and issued a fantastic cross where Emmanuel Giannaros rose above the Blacktown defenders to obtain Olympics’ third goal with an exceptional header.
Olympic continued their attack and almost got a fourth goal courtesy of a Phil Makrys free-kick, however Jaeger once again pulled off a good save and prevented another goal. In the 86th minute, Paul Henderson was substituted with goalkeeper, Nenad Vekic who prevented Blacktown from obtaining a late consolation goal in the final minutes of the game.
The Quarter Final fixtures will be drawn on Tuesday 14th June, at Football NSW with the Quarter Finals to be held on Tuesday 21st/Wednesday 22nd June.

haha. I've noticed there was no talk on this board about the loss. Its a new generation I guess. what for?! we're going to rip Tsekenis' head off for 1 loss? You expect us to win every game? It was your generation that fucked our generation of supporters. This is a clear example of why we don't have a club house, a stadium and couldn't hold onto a coach for more then two seasons. Big shit if we lost.

Big shit if we lost. No one wants to rip Tzskenis' head off. He's done a better job than all the others combined since the NSL. All I asked was whether there should be a little debate. No debate, no forum membership growth. About the infrastructure, it wasn't my generation. Try two generations before mine.

Some people are hard to please. freaken, I was talking about the Waratah Cup games. Makes no difference. But I concede playing 3 games a week whilst being semi-pro is a bit tough.
