Had he signed a contract with GCU then they would have come to a mutual agreement on his release. Unless he agreed to terminate the contract without a payout there would have been some money paid... whether it be the full value of the contract or less only GCU and Smith will know

Agreed, it would have been his problem, which is why I'm happy for his sake that he can finish the season with Olympic and potentially win a medal.
