Despite, being renowned as one of the most respected football club’s in Australia, Sydney Olympic FC had yet to achieve two respective accolades, yet in 2011 the ‘Blues’ altered history and were remarkably crowned both the 2011 Minor Premiers and 2011 NSW Premier League Champions. The ‘Blues’ defied the odds and claimed both titles in front of their home supporters at Belmore Sports Ground and were considered by many to be the most dominative outfit in the NSW Premier League in the 2011 season.
Integral to the team’s success were the 2011 coaching staff led by Peter Tsekenis, a former Sydney Olympic FC player himself and his long time friend and Assistant Coach, Peter Papoythis who mentored the 2011 squad. Both Tsekenis and Papoythis spoke candidly about their desire to win the ‘double’ at the beginning of the season and quickly notified the players of their objectives. At the completion of the competition and in the aftermath of the Grand Final victory both Tsekenis and Papoythis were overjoyed with the ‘Blues’ success, clearly ecstatic that their dream to claim the ‘double’ came true.
Tsekenis will forever treasure the success of the 2011 season, with the former Sydney Olympic FC Captain and player happy to rejoice with the club that he had supported as a junior.
“The Grand Final victory was very special for me, especially as a former captain, player and long-time supporter of the club. It was very nice to be part of that” Tsekenis revealed.
Like the many who were captivated by the stellar crowd attendance at the Grand Final, Tsekenis believed that the crowd numbers justified the tremendous support that the club has, with Tsekenis undoubtedly proud to witness the tremendous love and support that the supporters have for the club.
“ The strong and astounding crowd attendance at the Grand Final shows the tremendous support the club has and it was definitely good to see the joy on the faces of our loyal supporters, as a result of the victory” Tsekenis said.
Richie Luksic, who captained the 2011 Championship winning side will also treasure the memories that were cultivated at the 2011 Grand Final, as thousands witnessed the joy which lit up his face as he lifted the Championship trophy, along side the coaching staff and his team mates, in front of the many in attendance.
The spectacular crowd attendance drew much attention from various media outlets, with both Sydney Olympic FC and Sydney United praised for their innate passion and love of football.
A proud Sydney Olympic FC fan revealed how he felt at Belmore Sports Ground, on that unforgettable Monday afternoon proudly stating that,
“The feeling was second to none, to beat our cross town rivals in front of the eyes of over 12,000 of the [Sydney] Olympic family, is something I will remember forever”
With another fan adding that, “The Grand Final victory symbolises the leaps and bounds that the club has made since entering the NSW Premier League and hopefully it marks a new era of a stable and competitive Sydney Olympic FC.
