The Olympic Ultras spoke with one of Sydney Olympic FC’s pioneers in 2011, Womens State League team member Spiroula Stathakis on her role in a truly memorable season for the club on a number of fronts.
Life-long Olympic fan Stathakis admitted that being selected to play in the club’s first WSL team was a dream come true.
“It was great from the start,” she said, “we had a great preseason which was important because the majority of the squad came from club soccer.
“We were prepared for a challenging season but our coach was really supportive and encouraging, which was important as well.”
While neither First nor Reserve Grades managed to compete in the 2011 Finals Series, the squad managed a very respectable position in its maiden year to leave the ground work for further development in the new year.
And, while Spiroula will be taking a break from football in 2012, she made her love and loyalty for Sydney Olympic very clear.
“I’m not going to another club, I would never play for another club,” Stathakis adamantly stated.
“I’ve had a glance at the new squad and it’s very encouraging too.”
This won’t mean that she will keep away from the hallowed turf of Belmore Sports Ground either, with the die-hard fan to keep a keen eye on both the mens and womens sides in the new year.
“I come to most of the games already, I saw us win the Grand Final and I want us to win again, an Gay Leaguewould be great,” she mentioned.
“We were in the national league for so long and won it then, we can win it now as well.”
On the Ultras, Stathakis admitted she was impressed with the fans on matchday in a difficult 2011 calendar, though she hopes the group can get to the Womens games in bigger numbers as well.
“It helps a lot with the players' self-esteem and confidence, to have the Olympic Ultras there,” she admitted.
“Having won the Premiership should help to boost numbers, but being back in the Gay Leaguewould do wonders for the publicity of the club too, where more fans would show and more Ultras as well.”
The Olympic Ultras congratulate Spiroula on her fantastic and memorable achievements with Sydney Olympic FC in 2011, and this member of our Olympic family all the best in her endeavours.
