OLYMPIC KICK OFF 2012 SEASON WITH WIN
Sydney Olympic FC have opened their 2012 title defence with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Division 1 outfit Schofields Scorpions.
Coach Peter Tsekenis made his intentions clear by fielding an attacking 4-2-3-1 formation and dominated the match from the opening moments.
The Blues, who have only worked on fitness training to date, looked particularly impressive with the ball at feet and in their short passing play.
Schofields, despite playing some good football of their own, did themselves no favours by being reduced to 10 men, with one midfield slapping Brett Studman in the face following a foul in Olympic’s favour.
The disadvantage made Schofields’ opener all the more surprising.
A well-played Olympic offside-trap was disregarded by the assistant as the receiving striker coolly finished his chance, making it 1-0 to the home side.
And, despite conceding, Olympic kept piling on the pressure, with Sama, Hadid, Giannaros and Angel decimating down the right flank in particular.
It was another slick piece of combination play which saw Angel cut in and charge at his marker, leaving him with no chance but to bring the impressive Olympic winger down and concede a penalty.
Up stepped up Makrys, who tucked away his penalty in an efficient and unassuming performance from the skipper.
Soon enough Olympic made it 2-1, with Sama redeeming himself for an earlier miss with a poacher’s goal just before half-time.
After the break Coach Tsekenis made a number of changes to his side, bringing on triallists Sam Awad and Joel Wood, as well as French import Junior and Japanese machine Kiji, with the latter two bagging a goal each in an impressive performance.
And, after recently hearing of the shock retirement of left-back Jerry Kalouris, up-and-comer David Dascar from APIA Leichhardt pulled in an industrious performance and looked right at home alongside Haydar, Studman and Giannaros at the back.
Kiji replaced Angel on the right hand side at half-time and played with much the same energy and creativity of friend and 2011 Olympic first teamer Takayuki Omi, so it was no surprise to see the winger wriggle his way into the box and slot away Olympic’s third.
And, in an exciting burst down the inside-left channel, fellow triallist Junior made himself some space before smashing the ball past the near post to make it 4-1.
Olympic were adamant that they were not done with the scoring, however, and finished with 5 to their name with five minutes to spare.
A shallow clearance from Schofields was met by left winger Troy Danaskos, who spectacularly beat his man with a one-two before knocking a delightful 40-yard cross to Kiji, who knocked the ball back into Ilic’s path, crashing the ball into the back of the net for the final time with a great finish.
At full time, Coaches Peter Papoythis and Tsekenis were indifferent with the performance from the team.
“We are still in the process of putting a new team together,” said Papoythis, “and we are glad that there are no injuries.”
Peter Tsekenis did like the energy that the triallists brought to the team, mentioning that “they really want to prove it, and they all have got something to show.
“It’s important for the boys not to get casual, but if we won 10-0 then I’d be more worried. There’s no point peaking so early in the season.”
Player ratings:
GK – Johnson: 5 Didn’t really have much to do, a few sloppy clearances.
18 – Dascar: 8 Looked very comfortable in what could otherwise be Olympic’s Achilles heel in 2012
4 – Haydar: 7 Another consistent performance, due for a massive season in 2012
3 – Studman: 7 Got feisty after being slapped in the face early on, no-frills and no mistakes from the Stud
2 – Giannaros: 9 Man of the Match, absolutely bossed the right flank for the entire 90 minutes.
10 – C. Triantis: 6 Played deeper than he’d probably like, never really in the thick of it but did his job.
7 – Makyrs: 6 Again very similar performance to Triantis, will be careful they both don’t get complacent.
19 – Gullo: 7 Didn’t demand the ball too often but tore up his flank when he had it.
21 – Sama: 7 Played with his back to goal very well, made up for a big miss with a good tap-in.
11 – Angel: 8 Like leather and lace with Giannaros, covered well when needed as well.
9 – Hadid: 7 Swapped with Sama midway through the first half, big target with a good touch.
12 – Danaskos: 8 Tipped for a massive season. Showed a deft touch and hunger to win every ball.
14 – Awad: 6 Played the holding role well once Makrys came off. Looks flexible enough to be useful.
15 – Kiji: 7 Showed several great bursts of pace and bagged a goal.
16 – Ilic: 6 Took his chance well.
17 – Wood: 5 Was a bit isolated in the second half, didn’t really seem hungry to get himself involved.
20 – Junior: 8 Took a while to get into the rhythm of the game then went off like a house on fire.
22 - Hooper: 6 Must be glad to get some playing time with the Firsts.
