The Olympic Ultras spoke exclusively this week with former Sydney Olympic goalkeeper and rising star Nenad Vekic on his transition from the NSW Premier League to Hong Kong’s First Division League.
The young ‘keeper has immediately made his mark overseas since leaving Belmore Sports Ground in mid-2011, quickly securing a starting position for Hong Kong side Tuen Mun with some impressive performances.
“It resembles my time at Olympic,” mentioned Vekic, adding that “we have a very positive training environment and boys from a number of nationalities, so everybody brings something to the table.
“Everyone gets along really well and it made it easier for me to adjust being overseas.”
Being exposed to a well-supported national league side in Tuen Mun has also meant that young Nenad has an even bigger fan base than before, something he admits is extremely important.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling when fans send your own highlight videos they make for you,” Vekic accepted humbly, “and they are always at games and travel in big numbers away as well.”
The joys of playing in a higher-profile and nationally-televised league overseas aside, the self-confessed Olympic Ultra is both grateful for his experiences and pleased that his time at Tuen Mun has already improved his game.
“The combination of exposure and performance has really helped me to develop, and I feel more mature as a ‘keeper,” Vekic said.
“I’ve also been offered an extension before half-way into the season so I’m really happy to have made a name for myself here based on my performances in training and on the day.”
The YouTube streams certainly speak for themselves, with Nenad’s impressive run of form televised throughout Hong Kong and streamed over the internet.
On Sydney Olympic’s 2011 success and the Ultras’ plans for 2012, the western Sydney export had an immense respect and passion to share with his boyhood club and the fans that adore him still.
“I’m definitely the biggest supporter of Olympic,” Vekic admitted proudly, “it was my 1st club and my most memorable.
“The Ultras were unbelievable,” he said, “and there’s a great respect for them knowing the effort they put in every week to support the team.”
On encouraging bigger numbers for the Ultras in 2012, Vekic made his thoughts very clear.
“I dont think much needs to be said; if you love football, then Olympic is the team to support.”
The rising star was keen to once again thank all his supporters back home, including the club, the boys, the Ultras, and coaches Peter Tsekenis and Peter Papoythis.
“I wish them the best of luck in the 2012 season, I have no doubt that the boys will dominate again.
