Earlier today we had a chance to speak to our NSW Premier League Championship-winning shot stopper Paul Henderson on Sydney Olympic FC’s 2012 prospects and for Sunday’s season opener against Rockdale at Belmore Sports Ground.
“We want to win all the time,” said the Olympic ‘keeper’, on his motivation to continue his distinguished career after the impressive 2011 Premiership and Grand Final double.
“We have a good group of mates in a hungry squad,” he said, “and we train well for each other.”
The strength in the Sydney Olympic unit may show itself on Sunday when the 2012 NSW Premier League season kicks off, but results were indifferent in preseason, a fact which Henderson admits.
“We didn’t have the best preseason, the best results, but our quality will shine through in competition.”
He added, “Our loss to Blacktown last weekend was a good wake-up call, and sometimes you need that to stay hungry too.”
With Sydney Olympic the team everybody is desperate to beat in 2012, Henderson believes the usual suspects will prove to be the Blues’ biggest challenges in their title defence.
“All teams have their strengths,” he said,” but you can’t go past teams like Sydney United, Blacktown City and Bonnyrigg because they are constantly making finals at this level.”
No doubt, one eye may already be on the Round 2 fixture against defeated finalists Sydney United at Edensor Park on April 9, but Olympic’s number 1 is more than confident of facing our rivals with three points already on the board.
“We have the quality to win, we want to get on the right foot and I believe that we will deliver for our fans this weekend.”
Sydney Olympic FC vs Rockdale City First Grade play this Sunday at 5pm to kick off what is one of the most highly anticipated NSW Premier League editions in recent years. U18s kick off at 1pm and U20s at 3pm.
