I had a bit of spare time, so I decided I go on the Olympic Website. It doesn't take a genius to work out that in every recent article, Sydney Olympic has began to call themselves 'The Blues'...
Go see for yourselves... Do you think this is a possible name for an expanded Gay Leagueclub in the future? Sydney Blues?

i think Sydney Olympic would sound better
if Olympic was to go to the Gay Leaguei wouldn't see anything bad about the name Sydney Olympic

I agree. Olympic shouldn't change for anyone... But Olympic = Greek. And Australians are racist. If the club were to be promoted, a name change could be necessary to branch out to new supporters.
Olympic has changed its name temporarily before. I don't think Olympic will ever loose the acknowledgement of its history or Greek identity or Greek backing. I don't see a name change taking that away.

Theyve been called 'the Blues' for years I remember the match programs from 20 years ago were called 'Blues news'. The Blues is an unofficial nickname, it will alway be Sydney Olympic, the FFA can go fuck themselves if they dont like it
A name change is not necessary, Olympic tried that before with "Olympic Sharks" it wont work

Sydney Blues was the name of the Gay Leaguebid run by the consortium that owned Olympic in the 1990s-2000s. Chairman Nick Politis withdrew his support for the bid in 2004 when it became public that Frank Lowy, chairman of FFA, was going to be a part-owner in the alternative bid, aka HAKOA.
so; 1. goes to show how much Lowy hates us and how driven his is by his personal agendas, 2. reflects that you like many football fans probably arent old enough to remember that, and 3. points to eagerness to dump names, history and established setups for the sake of branding in Australian sporting culture.
mate youre probably not much younger than me but its important to know that we are Olympic and they can all go get fucked. We are an open club for all who want to make themselves welcome, but Aussie football is full of haters. changing our name doesnt make them hate us less, and doesnt make us more Olympic.
PREMIER LEAGUE DEFENCE STARTS TOMORROW RE GAMOTOOOOO

I wouldn't support a Sydney Blues, only if Olympic was in the name

our club changed its name before from Pan-Hellenic to Olympic, something that is inherently Greek but ultimately universal, the Olympic spirit is exactly what we are about.. proud to be Greek, deeply rooted in historic tradition, but also the aspiration of glory and success through sport.
Cutting it short, why would we need to change our name? We dont call the Olympics the 'world championships of most things' because we dont want people to think its Greek

Thanks for the information. I know a bit about the bid and Lowy situation but not a lot. I am young, and as far as history goes I have been told everything, not really lived it.

Sydney Olympic is one of the best names for a club in this country. There will be NO name change again. but if we are forced to. Give the FFA a choice of Sydney Olympic or Panhellenic FC. To give our name away would be the end of our club and it's history. In fact, none of the old ethnic clubs should have to change their name. The people in charge of football in this country have forgotten who and when it all started. If Sydney United or Apia or Bonnyrigg were in the same position, I would support them as well.
