FNSW - Match Report
Sydney Olympic win thanks to an Awad screamer 22.04.12 00:18

Marconi Stallions faced their old rivals Sydney Olympic on the magnificent green top of Marconi Stadium and went down thanks to a cracker of a goal from Sam Awad with only his first touch of the game.
“Sammy has always been a decent player and he’s probably been floating around a while,” said his coach Peter Tsekenis.
“He became available at the beginning of this season and I thought it was a good opportunity because he’s fairly versatile.
“He got a late run tonight and there was the opportunity for the shot. You just hope that he can pull one out for you and he did because I know he’s capable”
Tsekenis’s opposite, Marconi’s Luke Casserly, was also impressed with the goal and philosophical about how it changed the game in the end.
“What do you do when someone scores a goal like that?” he asked almost rhetorically. “It was a belter from a long way out and sometimes it goes against you.”
Early in the game David Gullo fired just wide of the post after receiving a delightful cross from Will Angel. It was a close call for the visitors but one which Marconi survived.
In the 20’ minute a long, through diagonal ball cut the Marconi Stallions defence apart and somehow it fell nicely to Angel on the other side of the park, but unfortunately for Olympic he rushed his shot at the out coming James Chronopoulos and the ball finished just over the crossbar.
Marconi’s reply came shortly afterwards. From a corner kick, which was half-heartedly cleared away by Sydney Olympic, Daniel Severino blasted a powerful shot straight into the arms of Paul Henderson.
Marconi’s best chance of the opening half fell to the evergreen Nahuel Arrarte who drove the ball forcefully towards the bottom left hand corner of the net only to be met by the statue-like figure of Peter Triantis who managed to cleverly block the shot almost standing on his own goal line.
In the second-half the early chance fell to Marconi when Jamie McMaster lobbed the ball towards goal only to see it take a slight deflection and finish over the crossbar.
Chris Triantis then almost struck back at the other end for Sydney Olympic but his thunderbolt finish ended up just wide of the net.
The game meandered gently along until the 81’ minute when Nathan Elasi came close for Marconi but it wasn’t to be their night.
In the 88’ minute the only goal of the game arrived and it was the sealer for the visitors. Sam Awad fired in a bolt from the blue that ended up straight into the back of the net. He had just entered the field of play when a loose ball from well outside the area ended up in his pathway and he blasted home.
Peter Tsekenis, the winning coach of Sydney Olympic, certainly enjoyed celebrating the win with his team afterwards.
“That’s what it’s about, winning and losing, and enjoying the moment when you’re winning,” he said.
“We didn’t take all of our chances today but we are at the top of our game so we kept going.
“The way we played I wouldn’t have been happy with a draw, but we were playing a quality side and there’s always a chance that you might concede one. In regards to the effort and performance today, I would have been quite disappointed not to have won.”
On the other side of the spectrum Marconi’s coach Luke Casserly expressed similar sentiments. His side certainly had some good chances too and Casserly was disappointed with the overall loss.
“If you are looking at today’s game, our goalkeeper didn’t have to make a save,” he said. “We had two super chances in the first-half, but ideally the game is there to score goals.
“Defensively we were very solid and the only opportunity they had was that belter from a long way out.
“To me they came at us with a really high tempo in the first 15’ minutes and they sort of had us on the back foot.
“After that the game started to take shape where you had two very hard working and well organised teams that didn’t give each other much of an inch.
“We are a little bit disappointed and, on another day, it could have been different.”

www.olympicultras.com.au/news/127During the NSW Premier League match between Marconi and Sydney Olympic FC played last night 21 April, a solitary flare was thrown from behind the stadium and onto the field of play. The Olympic Ultras were neither present nor responsible for the lighting of any flares at Marconi Stadium last night. As such, it is clear that the Olympic Ultras have no case to answer. Youve got a case to answer because you werent present. If youwerent at the game then you were definitely capable of being responsible for throwing it from OUTSIDE
Seeing as you blokes are quite keen on flares (going by numerous posts and threads on here) id have to say that it looks a bit dodgy
Question then becomes - if you werent at the game, where were you?
