Jets land Beckham coup
Newcastle Jets has pulled off a major coup, luring football superstar David Beckham and his LA Galaxy team to the Hunter for a one-off friendly match next month.
The Jets will host Galaxy, which also features American World Cup hero Landon Donovan, at EnergyAustralia Stadium on November 27 at 7.30pm.
The match is expected to attract 23,000 fans and bring more than $1 million to the economy.
NSW Premier Kristina Keneally on Wednesday joined the Minister for the Hunter and MP for Newcastle Jodi McKay, Jets chairman Ken Edwards and Gay Leagueboss Lyall Gorman to announce details of the exhibition game.
"NSW is Australia's premier state for major global events and we're particularly keen to promote regional NSW destinations, so this is a great coup for the Hunter and the State," Ms Keneally said.
"Australia is a sport-loving nation and our passion for football has grown in recent years with the success of our Socceroos on the world stage.
"NSW has recently hosted the successful Sydney International FIFA Fan Fest, Australia versus Paraguay match and the football-themed Breakfast on the Bridge.
"We want to show the world we are ready to host the World Cup in 2022 and securing major events such as this exclusive match for NSW puts us in a strong position during the bid process."
