2010 Junior Sports Star: Olympic snap up a Red Devil
MAX Smith is convinced the two years he spent at the Dulwich Hill Football School is what pushed him over the line for selection at one of the state’s best football clubs, Sydney Olympic.
Max, 12, played for Marrickville Red Devils for eight years, but it was at the Dulwich Hill Football School that he fine tuned his technical ability.
``I don’t think I would be playing for Olympic if it wasn’t for the Dulwich Hill academy,’’ Max said.
``It was really focused on skills, first touches, short-sided games. It definitely helped my game.’‘
Max understands that Sydney Olympic is a club with a long and distinguished history in Australia football, both at a junior and senior level.
``They’re a really big club and they play at the highest level in my age group.’‘
But it was the Marrickville Red Devils that provided Max with his biggest inspiration, meeting former Red Devil, Australian international Tim Cahill.
``That was really cool meeting Tim Cahill. I got to shake his hand after the World Cup,’’ he said.
``He’s a great role model for kids in the area, one of the most recognisable faces in the Aussie team.
``It’s pretty cool because it shows you can get somewhere from playing for a team like Marrickville just like he did.’‘
* Nominations have now closed for the Cumberland Courier Junior Sports Star awards, for athletes aged 10-16.
