EXCLUSIVE: South Melbourne coach Eddie Krncevic is set to sign Ljubo Milicevic on a short-term deal and the VPL club could have the former Socceroo and Jets captain in their side this Sunday.
Milicevic, 30, will fly back into Melbourne later tonight after a month in Switzerland following a parting of ways with his former Gay Leagueclub Newcastle Jets.
The defender has been training with Scott Chipperfield’s club Basel and it appears Milicevic will return to Switzerland in the European off-season to sign with a club. China and Saudi Arabia are two other options.
In the interim Milicevic sees South Melbourne under the tutelage of former Socceroo striker Krncevic as the ideal destination to remain match-fit.
The Victorian Premier League club are workign feverishly on the paperwork required to sign the former Perth Glory and FC Thun UEFA Champions League player and hope it can go through smoothly.
“He’s a good footballer, he’d be a delight to have in the team and he’s a personality. He’d fit in very well at South especially with the team we have at the moment,” Krncevic told au.fourfourtwo.com.
South side features Gay Leagueloan players Kamal Ibrahim and Kliment Taleski from Melbourne Heart and rising stars Brad Treloar and former Football Superstar contestant Steven Topalovic.
“The only problem we might encounter is we able to register him because the registration dates have finished," said Krncevic.
“Hopefully it won’t be a problem and he can join us till I guess June when the window opens up in Europe again."
If the red tape goes through, Milicevic could be in the side for this Sunday’s clash with Bentleigh Greens.
Krncevic’s team has started the season well. Unbeaten in their first two games and buoyant after last week’s remarkable 6-4 victory over Springvale after being 2-0 down at half-time, tonight South play Port Melbourne in a midweek fixture.
Krncevic added: “Fingers crossed we can get the paperwork through and we’d welcome him with open arms. He probably could play on the weekend if he’s over the jet-lag.”
