Olympic girls won their first game
posted by on March 28, 2011
The Women’s 1st Grade team started their First Historical Game for Sydney Olympic with a memorable win where there were 7 goals scored in the match. The girls started the game off well with some good passing in the midfield building up to the attack which put pressure on the oppositions defence , from all the pressure Kate Halaska received a ball just outside the penalty area for a cross as the ball bounced on the half volley Kate chipped the keeper from an a narrow angle, other goals scored in the 1st half Effie Rodopolous took on the defence deep from the attacking third and with a narrowed angle shot Effie used her left foot to do the rest to level the scores.
At Half time the score was 2-2 Northbridge came out firing in the second half Sydney Olympic were cemented in their own half for 20 min until Kate Halaska again took on 3 defenders and scored a memorable goal again by planting a goal top right corner and again 5 min later Kate took on the defence with a perfect shot hit the cross bar and the ball fell to Prue Pearson where she used part of her body to chest the ball in 4-2 to Sydney Olympic. The girls from there on in was pressured by Northbridge which got the their 3rd goal , but credit has to be given to Sydney Olympic for a courageous performance for a team which was lacking match fitness. The coaching staff has picked up good pointers and will be developing on the areas which need to be worked on for next week’s game.
Half Time 2-2
Full Time 4-3
Goals: Kate Halaska 2, Effie Rodopolous 1, Prue Pearson 1
The Reserve Grade drew 1-1 against Northbridge and the results for the other games were:
Northbridge – Sydney Olympic Under 16s 2-2
Halftime: Northbridge 2 Sydney Olympic 1
Fulltime: Northbridge 2 Sydney Olympic 2
It was the proverbial game of two halves. Northbridge dominated the opening exchanges with an accurate passing game combined with intelligent movement off the ball. This resulted in two goals scored from open play for the opposition. We created a couple of half chances holding out to half time two nil down. The girls were down but not out. Once again the team displayed tenacity and courage looked to push forward to peg one back. In the 45th minute Kylie Gioukaris brilliantly scored directly from a corner. This wonderful goal lifted her team and urged us further forward. With this new found confidence we started to play the ball on the ground and in the 62th minute Victoria Panourakis ran onto a through ball and drilled a left foot shot into the far side of the goal. A deserved equalizer and the team went looking for the winner but the referees whistle beat them. Two all the final result. Well done girls a gutsy performance.
Northbridge – Sydney Olympic Under 14s
Halftime: Northbridge 2 Sydney Olympic 0
Fulltime: Northbridge 3 Sydney Olympic 1
The Under 14's started the match strong, gaining plenty of success down the right side of the field. The girl's managed to combine well and some nicely constructed passing moves led to a couple of great opportunities. Unfortunately we were unable to capitalise with the final shot or cross just off the mark. In a few moments where we lost our concentration, particularly in defence, Northbridge capitalised, taking advantage of our eagerness to rush into the tackle at times.
The second half started brightly, although again a defensive mishap led to another goal. A big positive was the performance of Brandi Windle who terrorised Northrbridge down the right flank and also produced a stunning goal, a half volley from 25 metres out into the corner of the goal. Sienna Pigna also deserves a mention for her tireless running and good work on the left hand side.
Northbridge – Sydney Olympic Under 12s
Halftime: Northbridge 2 Sydney Olympic 0
Fulltime: Northbridge 4 Sydney Olympic 0
The effort displayed by the Under 12 girls on Sunday was nothing short of amazing. Playing with 9 players due to a freak injury at training and a few absentees the girls out on the field did themselves, the coaching staff, their families and the club very proud. Time and again the girls ran out of their skin to cover space usually occupied by another player, there were many last ditch tackles, vital interceptions and goal line clearances. Two very pleasing aspects were firstly 3 of the goals conceded came from outside out of the area and well constructed, not due to any defensive mishaps. Another was the girl's communication really stood out today and this experience will prove very beneficial in future games. Special mention must go to all girls and particularly Stephaie Grimbilos who played her first game in goals and pulled off a number of solid saves and Zeinab Hijazi who played on strongly despite copping a hard knock.
