Feature Match: Sydney Olympic vs Parramatta Lady Hawks
Finals contenders Sydney Olympic and Parramatta Lady Hawks have played out a frustrating 1-1 draw at Blick Oval, with goals courtesy of Zoe Kalos and Kate Halaska.
Both sides will consider it two points lost after an open game that was characterized by wasted opportunities and scrappy football.
The importance of the match was not lost on the players with the second half marred by some rather robust challenges and physical play. Both sides have their eyes firmly focused on finals football but on the evidence of this encounter still have plenty of areas to address.
Neither side looked completely comfortable with the ball early on, and while the intensity of the game never dropped, the ability to turn chances into goals was clearly lacking. Olympic were once again without attacking lynchpin Effie Rodopolous, in effect leaving the superb Kate Halaska with the creative workload.
Down the other end, a lot Lady Hawks' attacking impetus came from the enterprising play of their number 7, Zoe Kalos, whose ability to play penetrating passes in and around the opposition box led to numerous chances.
Lady Hawks' luck changed abruptly in the 15th minute however when Olympic's stand-in keeper Lauren Galano, under no pressure, let a rather innocuous Kalos free kick spill through her fingers and into an empty net. It was emblematic of the nature of the game that a goal should eventually come from a defensive error, considering the chances squandered.
Despite their profligacy in front of goal, Lady Hawks looked energetic and defensively sharp coming off the back of three games in a week. The openness of match, particularly in the second period, was perhaps less a result of fatigue as it was the willingness of both sides to throw players forward on the counter attack.
A frenetic start to the second start led to a debatable penalty decision, two players seemingly colliding as they challenged for a loose ball in the Lady Hawks penalty area. After some debate, the ever-reliable Kate Halaska stepped up and slotted past a stationary keeper to level the scores and set the stage for a tense finish.
Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of both coaches who were proactive with their substitutions, the endless flow of opportunities failed to produce a winner. A deep free kick cannoned off the Olympic crossbar while Halaska shot across the face with only minutes remaining.
A result either way would have been a good indication of the standing of both sides, but a draw in effect leaves us hanging. Lady Hawks now sit comfortably in fourth spot, while it remains to be seen whether Olympic, probably the next best side, can bridge the gap.
Olympic coach Enzo Calabria was philosophical about his team’s results to far.
"We only had eleven today. Once we get Effie [Rodopoulos] back I'm pretty confident that we can make up some ground."
"If it happens, it happens. The ball is round, it can bounce anywhere."
"Sure enough we started a bit flat but we'll get into the game when we have to. We just wait for the right opportunity."
Edd Terry however was disappointed his side could not make the most of it's chances.
"I thought we had the better of the game, we just didn’t finish."
"I think it was a soft penalty. I really don’t think it was one and to go down on that is a bit disappointing."
"I wasn't disappointed with the performance, just our finishing. I think the way we played the game was quite good."
