The Mayor of the City of Canterbury, Cr Robert Furolo MP, said he was delighted that work has commenced on stage one of the of the $8.5 million redevelopment of Belmore Sports Ground.
"Belmore Sports Ground has come to hold a special place in the heart of many local residents and I'm delighted that work has now started on the much-awaited upgrade of this iconic and popular sporting stadium," Mayor Robert Furolo said.
"I recently inspected works at Belmore, accompanied by young residents and Sydney Olympic Juniors and the overwhelming reaction to the development was one of excitement and anticipation.
"With nearly $5 million from the Federal Government, more than $2.5 million from the State government and $1 million from the Bulldogs and Canterbury City Council, we will once again see Belmore Sports Ground as the premier sporting field in our district.
"Stage one of the redevelopment will create state-of-the art training and office facilities, and upon completion, will become the permanent home ground of NSW Premier League football team Sydney Olympic.
"The redevelopment also means the Canterbury Bulldogs will resume training and administrative duties at their spiritual home kennel, Belmore Sports Ground.
"Impressive ultra modern facilities and amenities will include a new gymnasium with an altitude chamber and upgrades to the existing change rooms, functions rooms and corporate boxes.
"Neighboring Peter Moore Field will also undergo improvements, including upgrade and extensions of the change rooms and amenities, construction of disable access toilet and canteen, and replacement and repairs to the perimeter fencing.
"Belmore Sports Ground is a major asset for the City of Canterbury and the two-stage upgrade will ensure this iconic sporting ground and community facility will once again be a Mecca for sports fans and lovers of the famous Blue and White teams.
"The development of this important public asset for future generations is a fantastic boost to our community, and will undoubtedly, bring back the glory days that were created at Belmore." Mayor Robert Furolo said.
