The Olympic Ultras spoke with rising star Mitchell Stamatellis over the weekend to discuss the Sydney Olympic preseason campaign and the year ahead after the Blue and Whites wrapped up the friendlies with a convincing 2-1 victory over the Sutherland Sharks.
“I think it's been a solid start for us this year,” said the young and exciting defensive-minded player.
“Ef (Efrem Bunguric) the physio has done some strength and conditioning with us and all the boys seem to be fit and ready to go this coming season.
“The squad has gelled well with our pre season trip and it should be a good year.”
Asked what part of the 2011 he was looking forward to most, a confident 'Stama' quickly replied, “Playing against Bankstown.
“We have the ex-Bankstown coaches, a few ex-Bankstown players, and Bankstown is a big derby for the club. I think it'll be the best game this year and I'm looking forward to it.”
Very fitting for the young gun as the Ultras were present for his first grade debut in 2010, when he scored a screamer from almost 40 yards out against Bankstown at Jensen Park.
Stamatellis also had plenty to say about the Sydney Olympic supporters and the Ultras in particular.
“The history of the club is the greatest in the NSW premier league and the older Greek fans love their football and are often at the games so hopefully we can repay them with a few good results,” the dynamic defender stated.
On the Ultras, 'Stama' added, “The Ultras are always there, whether were struggling for results or winning convincingly, chanting and helping us get over the edge.
“It's like having a 12th man,” he said, with a chuckle, “and (Olympic veteran Anthony) Doumanis just lifts when he hears 'dou-dou-Doumani!'; hopefully there's plenty more Ultras to come.”
Unfortunately though for the young lad, a nasty tackle in the Steve Christoforidis Hellenic Cup seems destined to keep him sidelined for up to four weeks.
Mitchell did seem optimistic though that he was due to return soon, saying that “hopefully I should be back by round 1 or 2.”
“Hopefully I'm on the field doing what I can for the club, but if not,” affirmed Stamatellis with a wide smile, “I'm definitely with the Ultras."
The 2011 NSWPL kick off for Sydney Olympic next weekend, away to South Coast Wolves at John Crehan Park, Sunday 27 March.
The Olympic Ultras would like to wish Mitchell a speedy recovery and all the best for the 2011 season.
