Sydney Olympic trashed APIA at Lambert Park
posted by on May 1, 2011
After a number of wet days and discussions all week whether the game would be played or not at Lambert Park whilst all the youth and reserve grade games were washed out, the two former NSL giants entertained the crowd that turned up at Lambert Park.
The boys of Peter Tsekenis once again impressed everyone present and more and more Sydney Olympic fans are turning up at the away games and the anticipation for the first home game at Belmore Sports Ground is becoming greater and greater.
This time it was APIA Tigers that had a shot against the ‘blues’ but at no point during the game they showed they would be able to face the well drilled Sydney Olympic FC side. Two goals in the first half by Sydney Olympic and a quick response soon after APIA tried to get back into the game didn’t leave any chances for the home team to get anything out of this game.
Olympic scored just 13 minutes after the game kicked off, when Alex Smith carried the ball for the right and passed to Robert Mileski who fired and opened the score for Sydney Olympic.
The ‘blues’ did not stop there and continued pressuring the defence of APIA while the ‘Tigers’ where outplayed on the ground and the Sydney Olympic faithful were cheering on the grandstand. In the 34th minute, the ‘usual suspect’ Alex Smith, run down the left side this time and with an amazing goal that many A League players would be jealous of, made everyone stand up at Lambert Park when the ball ended in the back of the net.
The first half finished with everyone off the ground still talking about the goal by Alex Smith and when the two teams stepped on the ground for the second half it was obvious that APIA was eager to score a goal and get back into the game.
Just 7 minutes after the game kicked off Chris James scored for APIA. After a long run he had a good shot that saw the ball getting in the back of the net of Paul Henderson and APIA players feeling more comfortable on the ground.
Sydney Olympic did not let the Tigers fans smile for too long, as they showed once again this season, they came to Lambert Park to win the game and not let their opponents hope for a positive result against Sydney Olympic.
On the 53th minute, Phil Makrys did what he does best and with his passion and determination went through the APIA defence and scored for Sydney Olympic to make the score 1-3. The Sydney Olympic fans were smiling once again where the APIA fans were disappointed once again.
Olympic was dominating the game once again and with about half an hour to go, Alex Smith scored the fourth goal for Sydney Olympic in the 59th minute of the game. That was the end of the game for both teams as everyone knew that Sydney Olympic would be leaving Lambert Park with the 3 points and an impressive win.
Olympic had a few more opportunities to score more goals, with Husky Akil, David Gullo and Alex Smith whilst APIA also had the chance to score a goal but all chances did not capitalize and the game finished with a 1-4 win for Sydney Olympic, an even bigger win than the 1-3 win last season.
Sydney Olympic has demonstrated that they can deal with the consecutive away games and when the team reaches the level that the coaching staff are aiming for, with the support of the loyal supporters of the Club at Belmore Sports Ground in the second round, everyone would agree that this is going to be a good season for our favourite ‘blues’ after many years. Let’s all get behind our historic Club so we can drive our team, where it belongs at the top of the competition.
Sydney Olympic head coach, Mr Peter Tsekenis mentioned to the Football NSW Media representative shortly after the game: “I am happy because we are getting a result against a quality side like A.P.I.A. away from home, especially not knowing if we were going to play because of the weather. We created and took some chances today which in the last few weeks perhaps we didn’t do, but we showed today that there were some other players capable and up to the task. We got the result and probably could have scored a few more.”
