The Olympic Ultras spoke with young and aspiring goalkeeper Nenad Vekic on the club’s most recent successes, his tutelage from veteran Paul Henderson as well as his unique connection with the Blues spanning over a decade.
Talking about the memorable 3-2 victory over fellow NSL rivals Sydney United, Vekic admitted that taking the three points away from King Toms was crucial.
“It was a big win,” said a clearly pleased Vekic, “as the top 3 are all very close and it was also a big NSL derby, it was good to see the fans turn out and create a good atmosphere.
“The next few weeks are the same, we just have to continue playing our game.”
When asked further about the crowd, Nenad was both confident and firm in saying “It starts with the Ultras.
“If they get the numbers in, the people will come to not only watch the game but to be a part of the Greek atmosphere as well.” He continued, stating that “there is no club like Sydney Olympic and everyone should be proud to be a part of it.”
The talented shot stopper also recently admitted to the Ultras that Sydney Olympic played a special role in his career and his early love of the game.
“Olympic was my first club and that’s where my passion for football started,” mentioned Vekic, “and that’s where my passion for football started, we had the likes of Frank Arok mentoring us as kids and that proved a success. Olympic was known for attracting not only the big names but important ones as well.
The young Nenad Vekic also spoke to the Olympic Ultras about his time as a ball boy in his first two seasons at the club between 2000 and 2002, remembering the star-studded championship-winning Olympic side in particular.
“I was 12 and watching the likes of Nick Carle, Clint Bolton, Jade North, Ante Milicic, Ante Juric, Pablo Cardozo to name a few, and now some of us are close to playing against some of these names,” Vekic said.
And in his return to the Blues the young ‘keeper has nothing but words of praise for the coaches, support staff and his fellow players.
“I’m happy to be back, I had a choice between other clubs but this was an easy choice and I’ve been welcomed with open arms, I love it here.
“Tseka and Peter had turned us all into a family it’s great to be a part of this squad and everyone feels the same,” a clearly-pleased Nenad mentioned, adding that “It’s been a privilege to work with (first choice goalkeeper and veteran Paul) Hendo, hes not only a top ‘keeper but a good bloke as well.
“He has lots of experience and I learn from him every day, I’m in the best position right now to work with him and take some of his knowledge into my own hands.”
Of the challenge ahead, Nenad was calm and collected as he pondered the next challenges the team are to face in the league and the cup, especially the second round of the regular season to be played exclusively at Belmore Sports Ground.
“We have showed good fight to stay on top, there’s a long way to go in a long season and we need the full support from the fans in the weeks to come,” he said.
The jovial ‘keeper made sure to leave a note and a call to all the Olympic fans with a loud “ ELA REEEEE !! “
The Olympic Ultras congratulate Nenad on his good form and wish him all the best for the weeks to come.
Olympic progressed through to the Fourth Round of the Waratah Cup after their 3-2 victory over Bonnyrigg White Eagles midweek, while the Blues drew 0-0 against Marconi overnight to remain top of the table in the league.
