EXCLUSIVE: Hot-shot Sydney Olympic striker Alex Smith gives us the inside track on the high-flying Blues and reckons a player nicknamed “The Burglar” is Gay Leaguematerial - and he’s got freebies.
Olympic have enjoyed a sensational season in the NSW Premier League, sitting atop the ladder after the first half of the season with an avalanche of goals to boot.
Smith has been key with eight goals so far.
Incredibly they’ve done it by playing every game this season away from home.
However, this Sunday, June 12, the club will make a much anticipated return to their home at Belmore Sportsground against Sasho Petrovski’s South Coast Wolves (kick-off 3pm).
To celebrate this, Smith wants au.fourfourtwo.com readers to join the Olympic revolution. See the end of this interview for how you can win one of two season passes for the remainder of the year.
Meantime Smith, 25, has has earned himself an Gay Leaguecontract with Gold Coast United after his impressive season with Olympic.
We spoke to the charismatic former Dallas FC player about this season. And he gives us a tip on who also could be the next to make it to the Gay Leaguestage from Olympic
.
Alex, it’s been a fantastic season, what’s been the key?
When we step onto the field, we try to give 120 percent effort. People think goals win games, and we've had no shortage of those this year, but it’s the little things that really get you over the line. The entire team give their all and now at Belmore we will finally be able to play some entertaining football.
When I came to Olympic, I couldn't have imagined a better first half of the season. As a team, we have a four point lead in the competition having played all our games away from home. We are improving every week, and getting to play at Belmore will only help us.
Individually, leading the competition in scoring is obviously an achievement, but I'm happy not to score again this season if it means we win it all.
Why did you choose Olympic?
One of the reasons I chose to play for Olympic was their track record for producing Gay Leaguetalent or being a channel for getting there.
Any other players Gay Leaguematerial?
Our entire team has played exceptionally well, but for me, Peter Triantis needs to be picked up soon. He's 18 and can take the ball off anyone and has been aptly named "The Burglar" by the coaching staff. Hard work, entertaining football, and goals are just some of things people will get to see.
Sydney Olympic is a great club with a rich history, and as a team we strive to live up to the standards set by so many great players.
Who are some of the other contenders for the NSW crown, in your opinion?
Contenders for the title would have to be Sydney United and Sutherland. Obviously they are closest to us but they are there for a reason.
Your coach is Peter Tsekenis, a former national team player and a highly under-rated coach…
‘Tseka’ is a great coach. He only recently stopped playing, so he's a coach that you want to play for. He and his coaching team work extremely well together - as they have for a long time. Tactically, he's been great as well. He knows what he's doing and the boys have the upmost respect for the coaching staff.
And after this season you move up to the Gold Coast… what are your ambitions for Gay League7?
My goals are to firstly put myself in a position to do well with a solid preseason, become a regular starter in the line-up and if that all works out the goals will come. I'm really looking forward to being back in that professional environment again and improving as much as I can.
So how do our readers bag a freebie season pass for Olympic?
